![]() I could, for example, design it such that a new chapter always begins on a recto page, but that's not what the client wants. In I've sense it seems like maybe a unique case. I don't see a way to avoid this "empty frame added" issue in such a case when I need to make a revision to an earlier chapter. My current project is about 1600 pages total, structured as a book comprising about 20 separate documents. I've been working with long documents in InDesign since 2003 and I have created books up to 3,200 pages. I don't think you're doing a whole lot wrong - but what I can see is normal behaviour. Seriously look into working with Book Documents - turning off Smart Text Reflow for certain instances - Anchoring Images in your Text Frames so they flow correctly and with the text. I think there's more going on here than you think.įor a document like this - a File>New Book - might be a better workflow for you - and each document in your book would have it's own file - you compile the files in the Book Panel and arrange them as necessary.Īs said already the Text Reflow Options are great if it's threaded from Start to Finish with no breaks within the document threading.įor this workflow I would turn off Smart Text Reflow and control the relow manually. I would add this as an anchored image within the text frame.įrom what I can see the file is behaving normally - the pages move on - I am not seeing extra text frames behind existing text frames.įor Chapter 2 - you need this to start on a Right Hand Page - so you need to set that up in the Paragraph Style Chapter 2 will get pushed to verso and a blank text frame gets added behind the primary frame.īy not seeing the issue - except that you say you're manually adding pages for say an image. So it’s a good idea to quit and re-launch.Let's say you want to add a full-page graphic to the end of chapter 1, so you add a blank page between the end of chapter 1 and the beginning of chapter 2. Setting for an app are written to disk when you quit the app. Once we’ve done this, re-launch InDesign. This makes the margin alignment look straighter. It makes glyphs exceed the text frames by a bit. The number in this panel should always match the body copy text size. Turn on Optical Margin Alignment in Window > Type > Story panel. Make blacks always appear as they are built. Appearance of BlacksĬhange blacks printed or on-screen to appear as they are built. This makes it that missing fonts and hyphenation & justification problems get highlighted in yellow so you can resolve issues. Turn on highlighting for H&J Violations and Missing Fonts. Show missing fonts and hyphenation problems. I think Adobe sets it to grey to look stylish, but it’s not functional. You can lose artwork on a grey background. ![]() This will make the area outside your pages white rather than grey. Uncheck Match Pasteboard to Theme Colour. It’s quite surprising, if you don’t know why it’s happening. Smart Text Reflow add and removes pages from your document as you add or remove text. Set your baseline grid to increment at a more reasonable interval. ![]() ![]() They’re really subtle changes, but they make a big difference over long lengths of text. It makes the spaces between words, letters and glyphs flexible in small amounts. This will make justified type set prettier. Justification Settingsīetter justification settings for justified text only.Ĭhange Justification defaults. If it’s not right in some document you’re working in, you can always make changes in that document. This way, this hyphenation will be the default in all future documents. HyphenationĬhange Hyphenation defaults in Basic Paragraph. Since we’re making the default font size 9 points, we should change the default baseline grid to the corresponding leading size, which is 10.8 points. Make Basic Paragraph 9pt in the Paragraph Styles panel. Set a more reasonable text size for Basic Paragraph. Each new document your create after this will have those settings.Ĭhange these settings. To establish them, change settings with no document open. InDesign has a system of default settings. Hold the Option key, then click on Library. Remember, to get into your Library folder, you need to go to the Finder's Go menu.
